Aizawl: Legislator from Mizoram ZR Thiamsanga, who was visiting earthquake-stricken areas in remote Champhai district, performed an emergency cesarean section and helped a woman give birth when he was told there was no doctor available to take care of her.

Thiamsanga, a physician who specializes in obstetrics and gynecology, often puts his stethoscope on to handle medical emergencies in remote areas.

He was on a visit to his constituency, Champhai North near the Myanmar border, on Monday to assess dams caused by recent earthquakes and assess the COVID-19 case.

Thiamsanga told PTI that C Lalhmangaihsangi, 38, from the remote village of Ngor, who was expecting her second child, was bleeding profusely and was in critical condition.

He said the medical official at Chamhai Hospital was on leave due to health problems and the woman was not in a position to travel to Isol, some 200 kilometers away.

He added that when I was informed of the woman’s condition, she immediately rushed to the hospital and had an emergency caesarean section.

He said that the mother and the child are fine.

Thiamsanga said it is his responsibility to help those in need.

In June, he made headlines when he rushed to take care of an ailing security personnel guarding the India-Myanmar border, crossed a stream and walked several kilometers.

He fought the 2018 elections on the Mizo National Front (MNF) card and defeated Congressman MLA TT Zothansanga.

He is also currently the Vice President of the State Board of Health and Family Welfare.
