A 4.9 magnitude earthquake struck Ethiopia and people felt the shocks in the capital

TORONTO – A 4.9-magnitude earthquake with a depth of 10 kilometers has reportedly struck Ethiopia. The accident occurred in the Awash Fental area, about 165 kilometers southeast of Addis Ababa. Government Communications Services confirmed this in an update on social media.

The earthquake occurred on Sunday around 9 pm local time.

The shock was felt in the capital, Addis Ababa, in Metehara to the southeast and Kombolcha (near Dessie) to the north.

Volcano Discovery reported that 10 major earthquakes occurred around the world in the past 24 hours, including in Canada and the United States. The experiment tried in Ethiopia is included in the list.

The source indicated the longitudinal and latitudinal location of the epicenter as “9.1287°N / 40.3209°E Harare, Ethiopia.”

“Based on preliminary seismic data, the quake was likely felt by many people in the epicenter area. It was not supposed to cause serious damage, other than things falling off shelves, broken windows, etc.,” the source said.

Contrary to the report by the Ethiopian State Communications Services, the Volcano Discovery report stated that the accident occurred in Harare, about 41 km northwest of Gelemso in Oromia. According to this source, it happened around 8:10pm Addis Ababa time.

The Volcano Discovery website also described the earthquakes felt in nearby areas as “moderate.”

The Ethiopian government's communications services reported reports of minor earthquakes over the past few days. They don't expect any situation worse than this.

Ethiopia has witnessed unprecedented severe landslides in different parts of the country over the past few months, claiming the lives of more than 300 people.
