A strong 4.8 magnitude earthquake shakes southern Hawke's Bay

A 4.8-magnitude earthquake occurred late Sunday night in southeastern Hawke's Bay, about 5 kilometers from Buranghau.

Its depth was as shallow as 16 kilometers and is considered a strong earthquake according to GNS Science.

The GeoNet website showed that more than 2,000 people across the central and lower North Island felt the shaking at around 11.20pm.

There were eight aftershocks between 12.05am and 4.05am, the strongest of which was a 3.3 magnitude earthquake just before 3am.

On Sunday, an earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale struck central New Zealand. A person in the Wellington suburb of Ohero Bay said it was a “moderate tremor, like a truck crashing into the house.”

Farther from the epicenter, in Whanganui, another listener experienced “a good shudder as the bullets entered, and then swayed with the annoying weights of a window sash in an old two-storey log house.”

Jeremy Holmes, regional director of the Office of Emergency Management in the Wellington region, described it as a “big shake-up for the capital” but without major impacts.

A large apartment building in Wellington was evacuated on Sunday evening and the area was cordoned off due to fears of structural damage following the quake.

Just after midnight, a spokesman said the building had been assessed by New Zealand Fire and Emergency Services as safe to re-enter. The 16-storey building includes 123 apartments, in addition to retail and commercial offices on the lower four floors.
