A cluster of earthquakes over the weekend near Onalaska is no cause for concern, geologist says

If you were in Onalaska this weekend, you probably felt the earthquake. A 5.4 magnitude earthquake struck 63 miles southwest of the island on October 5 at 4:50 a.m., followed by several aftershocks. It created a seismic sequence where 10 aftershocks reached magnitudes greater than 4.

Although these clusters can cause concern that something much larger is happening, there is currently no way to predict it, said Elizabeth Nadin, a geologist from the Alaska Earthquake Center.

“I would say just focus on being prepared and making sure we have the necessary supplies,” she said. “If and when an earthquake of large, damaging magnitude occurs in your area.”

Earthquakes are common in the Aleutian Islands because the area is located where the Pacific plate is moving beneath the North American plate. Nadine said that earthquakes in the region are mainly caused by plates rubbing against each other, which causes rocks to rupture as pressure builds up and causes vibration.
