The 4.5-magnitude earthquake in Aradan, Iran, which shook the country's Semnan province late Saturday night, was likely caused by a nuclear test explosion.

The epicenter appears to be located about 100 miles southwest of Tehran, where residents reported feeling the quake.

“The timing of this event, which was immediately followed by a minor tremor reported in Israel, has led to speculation about its nature, with some suggesting that it fits the picture of a nuclear test explosion,” according to business news outlet Techedia.

“The recent seismic event has not been officially confirmed as a nuclear test explosion, and careful analysis and verification by relevant international authorities is needed,” writer Paul Ogbeide Goodwin warned.

Seismic stations, including the United States Geological Survey (USGS), detected the event but noted the absence of seismic pressure waves, which typically accompany natural earthquakes, raising the question of whether the “quake” was an explosion rather than an earthquake.

According to Iranian sources who spoke to The Cradle, the possibility of actually conducting a nuclear test “was being discussed at high levels in Iran.”

Israel has repeatedly expressed its concern about the accelerating pace of Iran's nuclear development program.

Israeli media reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held an unscheduled security briefing on Sunday following a cabinet meeting held to mark the first anniversary of the Hamas invasion and massacre on October 7. A scheduled meeting between Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer and French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot was postponed to accommodate the security briefing.

Also on Sunday afternoon, the Israeli military announced in a brief statement that a surgical strike had been carried out in Beirut, but revealed few details.

“The Israeli army is currently launching a targeted strike in the Dahiya area, a major Hezbollah stronghold. The IDF said details would follow. Dahiya, a suburb south of Beirut, was home to the headquarters of Hezbollah's Central Council. Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah was assassinated in the suburb by Israel in a huge bombing late last month.
