If you live in the Dillon area, there's a very good chance you'll feel the largest earthquake of the year in Montana.

But if you live outside southwest Montana, you've probably continued to sleep like a baby.

The USGS notes that this quake was strong enough to catch your attention, but it likely didn't cause any real damage before the population density in the vicinity of the tremor dropped.

When did the last Montana earthquake occur?

The USGS reported that the quake occurred just before 1:00 a.m., at 12:54 a.m. Monday and registered a very strong magnitude of 4.1. The epicenter was 12.4 miles east of Dillon, near the Beaverhead-Madison County line in the Carter Creek drainage.

This is located east of Interstate 41 between Dillon and Twin Bridges.

Dillon residents reported feeling their homes shaking, and the animals were very active just before the earthquake. But we haven't seen any reports of any actual damage.

The US Geological Survey says the quake's epicenter was at a depth of 8.5 miles, a relatively shallow depth.

The earthquake's impact was felt throughout southwestern Montana

A USGS map measuring community sentiment of the quake showed most reports coming primarily from around Dillon and Beaverhead counties, although some people as far east as Bozeman reported shaking.

There were also additional reports as far north as Helena, Deer Lodge, Philipsburg and Lake Georgetown in Granite County.

Earthquakes are fairly frequent in the southwestern corner of Montana, especially around Lima and Moneda Pass, due to its proximity to Yellowstone. But so far, 2024 has not seen many earthquakes larger than magnitude 3.
