Fleet Week San Francisco: The highly anticipated annual event kicks off with earthquake preparedness drills

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — As part of Fleet Week in the Bay Area, the San Francisco Department of Emergency Management is conducting a series of large-scale exercises with the Department of Defense and other local and state agencies.

They are preparing for what to do and how to communicate in the event of an earthquake.

Specifically, they are working on two main things for Tuesday's exercise that will take place at Piers 30 and 32.

Movement of what they call “disaster service workers” and clearing of roads, two things they have to do right after an earthquake.

Between 75 and 100 city workers volunteer their time to participate in this.

Fleet Week began in San Francisco on Monday, and for a few service members from the Bay Area, this week marks a special homecoming.

A group of them are being bused in from North Bay in Larkspur.

They also take a group from the East Bay to Alameda by ferry on the emergency ferry route.

At the same time, they will exercise their communications abilities, not only to bring essential workers to the city but also to remove debris to help clear roads.

This training exercise has been a San Francisco Fleet Week tradition for more than 10 years.

The city's Emergency Management Department says each year they build on what their team learned from the previous year.
