The Prime Minister and the President remember the tragedy of the 2005 earthquake on National Resilience Day

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari spoke about the devastating 2005 earthquake and stressed the need to improve disaster preparedness and resilience to climate change.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that government initiatives must include various sectors to ensure strong disaster preparedness, including infrastructure safety, poverty alleviation, and improved agricultural practices.

He added: “National Resilience Day represents an incentive for us to adopt best practices and implement policies and strategies aimed at strengthening our nation's resilience.”

Recalling the devastating earthquake of 2005, Prime Minister Shehbaz said: “October 8 reminds us of the devastating earthquake of 2005 – the greatest tragedy that befell Pakistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Our heartfelt prayers go to all those who suffered loss of lives and property.” He noted. He also noted that after the earthquake, the 2022 floods were a major disaster that highlighted Pakistan's vulnerability to climate change.

On this occasion, he expressed his gratitude for the valuable assistance provided by the international community, civil society and private charitable institutions in strengthening the government’s national response efforts during the 2022 floods disaster.

“The people of Pakistan have a history of philanthropy and generosity in times of crisis, and their response during the 2005 earthquake and 2022 floods is a living example of their benevolence,” he noted. “By the grace of God, we have always struggled and are still facing all these disasters with the help of our brave Pakistani brothers and sisters,” he concluded.

President Asif Ali Zardari echoed similar sentiments, calling for building infrastructure resilient to climate change. He said: “Today we celebrate National Resilience Day, which reminds us of the devastating earthquake that occurred on October 8, 2005, which claimed the lives of thousands.” He stressed the need to educate the public about disaster risk management and involve communities in preparedness efforts.

He expressed his gratitude to the international community for its support during the recovery period from past disasters. “Their support and solidarity not only helped us rebuild roads, education, health and other infrastructure, but also gave hope to those affected,” he said.
