As the risk of a major earthquake on Vancouver Island rises, the City of Campbell River and Strathcona Regional District are teaming up to offer earthquake response training courses.

A large earthquake could overwhelm the area's emergency response system, preventing immediate assistance to the community for an extended period, according to an Oct. 4 media release from the city of Campbell River.

The statement notes there is a potential risk of dam failure at John Hart Dam or Strathcona Dam until BC Hydro completes seismic upgrades planned for completion by 2030.

To help the community better prepare for this and similar situations, individuals can enroll in the 2024 Shake Out Self-Guided exercise and various first aid and radio certification courses.

On October 17, a self-guided exercise will allow community members to follow the steps they should take in the event of a major earthquake. Since downtown Campbell River is particularly at risk, this exercise is important for anyone who frequents the downtown core.

Five free practical sessions on “First Aid in Earthquake Situations” will also be provided. These sessions will explore slings and splints, compression bandages, tourniquets, wound care, and mobilizing the injured victim. They will prepare community members so they will be better able to care for their family members, friends, and loved ones after a major earthquake.

The Basic Amateur Radio Certification (HAM) course will be offered (26 hours). Amateur radio brings people, electronics and communications together. People use radios to talk across town and around the world, all without the Internet or cell phones. It is a lifeline during an emergency.
