SPARTA, North Carolina – Sparta felt a third earthquake of 2.2 magnitude Tuesday morning, days after a 5.1-magnitude earthquake.
The mayor of Sparta, Wes Brennegar, issued a state of emergency on Sunday after 5.1. An earthquake felt across North Carolina hit the city on Sunday. No injuries have been reported.
The epicenter was 54 miles northwest of Winston-Salem and it happened at 8:07 a.m., according to an official US Geological Survey report.
After the quake, the US Geological Survey reported that three more tremors of 2.2 magnitude struck the area.
The first came Monday morning at 4:43 am, about 3.1 miles southeast of Sparta.
The second came hours later at 7:10 am, about 4.3 miles east-southeast of Sparta.
The most recent one came at 6:30 AM on Tuesday. The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 2.2 earthquake 1.9 miles southeast of Sparta.
Prior to the 5.1-magnitude earthquake, the US Geological Survey says the region had experienced five previous tremors.
On Saturday, the region was hit by earthquakes of magnitude 2.1 and 2.3, and on Sunday, the United States Geological Survey announced earthquakes of magnitude 2.3, 2.6 and 2.2.
The mayor said the 5.1-magnitude earthquake caused widespread minor damage to homes in Sparta as structures and chimneys were destroyed.
He’s been visiting homes and businesses all day.
Many local businesses in Sparta have been closed due to the damage caused by the earthquake.
The city was under construction at the time of the earthquake.
A street project has been under construction for a year now. The mayor says if the 100-year-old waterline were still in the ground, that would have been catastrophic.
Three houses made of boulders were damaged, and the three families living in the houses were forced to relocate because the homes were no longer safe to live in after the earthquake kept them four to six inches off the ground.
As of Sunday, Sparta has felt as many as 11 tremors since Saturday, four of them scoring more than 2.6 degrees.
There were also six to seven minor tremors across the Ghani governorate on Sunday afternoon.
The mayor says the city is “not out of the woods yet”.

The epicenter was 54 miles northwest of Winston-Salem and it happened at 8:07 a.m., according to an official US Geological Survey report.
Many of those who experienced an earthquake said it lasted 10 to 15 seconds. Sunday’s 5.1 earthquake is the most powerful earthquake to have occurred in North Carolina since 1916.
A viewer in Pfafftown told us, “At around eight in the morning, our bedroom shook. We thought a tree had fallen but then we heard it was an earthquake.”
Experts with the US Geological Survey tell people to “prepare for more earthquakes” because aftershocks will continue near the main shock.
“The United States Geological Survey (USGS) advises everyone to be aware of the potential for aftershocks, especially when they are in or around weak structures such as unsupported buildings, the site reads.
Over the course of the next week, there is a 4 percent chance that one or more aftershocks will be greater than 5.1 degrees, according to the US Geological Survey.
Smaller earthquakes are likely over the next week.
The chance of an earthquake of magnitude 3 or higher is 56 percent.
Volume 3 and above is large enough to be felt near the epicenter. The number of aftershocks will decrease over time, but a large aftershock can cause the numbers to increase again, temporarily.
US Geological Survey experts say this earthquake could be part of a sequence.
The website reads: “Earthquake sequences may have larger and potentially destructive earthquakes in the future, so remember: drop, cover, and comment.”
