The Great California Earthquake Drill is scheduled for next week

Next week, the Great California Earthquake is scheduled to take place, giving Californians another chance to prepare for the next earthquake.

The Great California Shakeout, an annual earthquake drill, is scheduled for Wednesday, October 17 at 10:17 a.m.

This training is a good time for all residents, businesses, schools, first responders and others to practice how to respond and prepare for an earthquake.

In recent months, Southern California has seen an increase in seismic activity, with multiple earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 or greater hitting the region — some of which were felt throughout the Santa Clarita Valley.

What to do when an earthquake hits

Experts remind residents when an earthquake strikes to fall, cover and hold on.

“Your previous experience dealing with earthquakes may give you a false sense of security; perhaps you did nothing, ran outside or stood in the doorway, and escaped without sustaining any injuries. Or perhaps you arrived at your office, and others thought you overreacted. “After a major disaster, families should be prepared with enough food, water and emergency supplies to last up to two weeks until help arrives,” Marilyn Jimenez, a spokeswoman for the American Red Cross, said in a previous KHTS article. “Build an easy-to-carry emergency preparedness kit that you can use at home or take with you if you have to evacuate. Include items such as water, non-perishable foods, a flashlight, extra batteries, a battery-operated radio, a first aid kit, and medications.

It is also important that residents avoid leaving their cars with less than half a tank of gas.

Another way to prepare is to keep extra money on hand.

Homeowners are encouraged to know where their gas and water shut-off valves are located and to know how to turn them off in the event of an earthquake.

California residents are encouraged to download the MyShake app to receive earthquake alert messages on their mobile phones.
