But we got a reminder over the weekend that there’s something else we need to add to that list. Earthquakes. On Sunday, August 9, a 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck near Sparta, North Carolina. Some damage has also been reported.

While we know we are witnessing earthquakes here in Kansas, there is a large fault line nearby. The New Madrid Fault Line. The epicenter is located in New Madrid, Missouri and also passes through parts of Arkansas and Tennessee.

This fault line produced four of the largest earthquakes in North American history over a three-month period between 1811 and 1812. The earthquake was felt by people for several years.

After earthquakes from 1811 to 1812, there were more earthquakes of magnitude 5 and damage in Missouri, Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama and Indiana.
