South Carolina earthquakes shake Coronaka in Greenwood County

A small earthquake on Thursday preceded the recent tremors.

GREENWOOD COUNTY, N.C. — It turns out the 2.2 magnitude earthquake that shook part of Greenwood County on Thursday was just a preview of what was to come, as eight more quakes struck under the same area just days later.

The USGS reported seven earthquakes near the community of Coronaka and one near Cokesbury — all on Sunday. The magnitude of the earthquakes ranged from 2.5 to 1.5 magnitude, and a number of them were greater than 2 magnitude. Magnitude 2.5 earthquakes tend to be the threshold at which people feel them, and in this case, only a small number of residents reported feeling the quakes except for a few of the larger ones.

Most of the earthquakes occurred in the area west of the northern reaches of Greenwood Lake. A group of multiple earthquakes over a specific period of time is generally referred to as a swarm, and South Carolina is no stranger to it.

In recent years, the Lugof and Elgin regions have experienced occasional swarms of earthquakes, the largest lasting for most of 2022 and nearly 80 earthquakes. The area has not been as active in recent years but still experiences one or two small earthquakes every few months.
