Greenwood County was rocked by seven earthquakes over the weekend

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH) – Residents of Greenwood County were shaken this weekend by a series of at least seven earthquakes.

The South Carolina Division of Emergency Management, in cooperation with the USGS, recorded a total of seven earthquakes on Sunday, October 13 in the Coronaka area, ranging in magnitude from 1.5 to 2.5. An additional earthquake was reported in Cokesbury.

Earthquakes with a magnitude between 2.5 and 3.0 are usually felt more clearly, while earthquakes with a magnitude of 5.0 and above can cause damage.

According to geologists from the College of Charleston, South Carolina experiences between 10 and 20 earthquakes a year.

In response to these events, Governor Henry McMaster declared October 13-19 as Earthquake Preparedness Week in South Carolina. Residents are encouraged to practice “Drop, Cover and Hold,” an exercise designed to keep people safe during earthquakes.

The exercise consists of the following steps:

Get down into position on your hands and knees. Cover your head and neck with one arm and hand as you crawl to seek shelter under a nearby table or desk. Hold on to your shelter with one hand until the shaking stops, stay on your knees and stay steady. Cover your head and neck with your other arm and hand.

*Note: Individuals who have difficulty moving or cannot stand without assistance can practice earthquake safety in different ways.
