147 earthquakes were recorded in West Java, Indonesia throughout September

TEMPO.CO, Bandung – The Bandung Geophysics Station of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded a total of 147 earthquakes in the West Java region throughout September 2024. According to the head of the Bandung Geophysics Station, Tejuh Rahayu, the majority and of these, 132 tremors , originating from shallow depths, less than 60 km.

Fifteen earthquakes were recorded at average depths ranging from 60 to 300 kilometers. “In terms of magnitude, the largest recorded earthquake was a magnitude 5.0, and the smallest was a magnitude 1.2,” Teguh said on Monday, October 14, 2024. In terms of location, 75 earthquakes were concentrated at sea, while another 71 occurred on land.

Of the 147 earthquakes, 14 were felt, including a devastating 5.0 magnitude earthquake on September 18, 2024, at 9:41 a.m. local time. This earthquake is centered at coordinates 7.19 degrees south and longitude 107.67 degrees east. This earthquake occurs at a depth of 10 kilometers, as a result of the activity of the southern Jarut (Garcila) fault. This was followed by 34 aftershocks over the next two days.

Daryono, head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, confirmed the relationship between the 5.0 magnitude earthquakes in the Bandung and Jarut area and the activity of the South Jarut Fault.

“The earthquakes were undoubtedly caused by the Garsila fault,” he told the newspaper Tempo on the night of Friday, September 20, 2024.

Dariono further explained that the earthquake's source mechanism was consistent with the northeast-southwest orientation of the Garsila fault line. The series of aftershocks confirmed that the tremors were shallow crustal earthquakes caused by a strike-slip fault mechanism.

“So far, the magnitude 5.0 earthquakes in Bandung Regency and Garut remain the largest earthquakes caused by the Garsila Fault,” he added.

Prior to these events, devastating earthquakes caused by the Garsila Fault included a magnitude 4.2 earthquake on November 6, 2016, and a magnitude 3.9 earthquake on July 18, 2017. These tremors damaged many buildings and homes in Pangalingan and Kamogang.

Based on updated data from the West Java Provincial Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), as of Friday, September 20, 2024, the affected population reached 11,352 families or 45,753 people. The majority of those affected were residents of the Bandung region, with 10,101 families or 39,135 people. In Garut district, 1,246 families or 6,601 people were affected.

A total of 35 people, all residents of the Bandung area, were seriously injured, while 98 others sustained minor injuries. In Garut, five people were injured. The greatest building damage occurred in the Bandung area, where 720 homes sustained severe damage, 875 units sustained moderate damage, and 2,979 residences sustained minor damage.

Apart from Bandung and Garut, residents' homes in other areas were also reported to have been damaged. One house each in West Bandung Regency and Purwakarta was severely damaged. In addition, one house in Cimahi City and one in Bogor District sustained moderate damage.
