The regiment trains for earthquake rescue operations

About 60 members of the Cayman Islands Regiment took part in a realistic exercise designed to deal with building collapses resulting from events such as earthquakes.

Part of Dolphin Bay in West Bay was handed over to government forces on Saturday, October 12, for humanitarian and disaster relief work. A section of the building was filled with debris, wires and fake walls that needed to be drilled through, to create a challenging working environment designed to test the skills learned in the classroom.

“You get more hands-on when you walk into the building, and the more you see, the more you learn,” Eric Goff, 29, an airport security officer who joined the one-day exercise from the Cayman Brac-based division, said of the training.

Jermaine Law, who celebrated his 40th birthday in training and works in the security industry, said he wanted to join the Jamaica Defense Force as a young man, but his parents were not keen.

“When I came to Cayman, I had the opportunity to do that,” he said. “I can learn things and use them in my civilian life — that's one of the positives — so far it's been a plus in every way you can think of.”

Taivanes Uyug, 33, a research officer at the Ministry of Environment, said he joined because he wanted to test his ability to pass the training.

Uyug, from West Bay, added: “I wasn't sure I could do it, so I tried to see. You learn skills you don't normally get, or you have to pay a lot of money to get them.”

Major General Mark Lancaster, Director of the UK Army Reserve, who is also Honorary Colonel of the Cayman Force, said he had been campaigning for defense forces to be established in all of the UK's overseas territories for several years.

“To see how this regiment has evolved, it is remarkable that we have the capability that we have today and all the skills required to do this,” he said.

“I'm really very proud of them. It provides capacity for all three islands, where we can support other emergency services. We are continuing to go from strength to strength.”

The regiment's commander, Lt. Col. Roger Carter, a veteran of the Trinidad and Tobago Defense Forces who also served as his country's defense attaché in Washington, said his job is to organize the regiment into what it will look like in 10 to 15 years.

He added that the forces were mostly assigned to disaster relief work, and received training in urban search and rescue and medical training.

“Another thing we do very well is logistics, not only for ourselves, but also for other agencies,” he said, adding that the regimental command vehicle has already been used by the police, and its ambulance, which is a rugged off-road vehicle. A capable Unimog can reach places that civilian ambulances cannot reach.
