MEMA encourages participation in statewide “Big Shake” earthquake drills

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) is urging residents across the state to participate in the annual “Great ShakeOut” earthquake drill scheduled for Thursday, October 17, 2024, at 10:17 a.m. The self-training is designed to help participants practice basic safety procedures during an earthquake.

During the training, Mississippians will be reminded to follow the following three key steps:

Fall to the ground. Take a cover under a sturdy table or desk, to protect your head and neck. Wait until the shaking stops.

MEMA encourages individuals and organizations to register for the trainings by visiting the following website: www.shakeout.org. Registered participants will have access to additional preparedness resources and tips for conducting their own earthquake drills.

According to the Great ShakeOut website, more than 13 million people across the United States have signed up to participate in the 2024 workouts, including more than 245,000 individuals in Mississippi. While the state has seen only a few earthquakes historically, neighboring states and the New Madrid Seismic Zone caused shocks that were felt in Mississippi, highlighting the importance of preparedness.
