A 5.9 magnitude earthquake strikes eastern Türkiye

ANKARA, Turkey – A moderately strong earthquake struck eastern Turkey on Wednesday, causing widespread panic, officials said. There were no immediate reports of injuries or serious damage.

The 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck the town of Kali in Malatya province at 10:46 a.m. (07:46 GMT), according to the government-run Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency, or AFAD. Habertürk TV reported that residents of the nearby cities of Diyarbakir, Elazig, Erzincan and Tunceli felt the earthquake.

“We have not received any reports of any problems yet,” Malatya Mayor Sami Er told the state-run Anadolu Agency, adding that officials were still assessing possible damage in remote areas.

People rushed out of homes and offices in panic across the region, Habertürk newspaper reported. Many were waiting in the streets and parks, reluctant to return home. Orders were issued to close schools in Elazig.

Malatya was one of 11 provinces destroyed by a strong earthquake that struck parts of Türkiye and northern Syria last year. More than 53 thousand people were killed in Türkiye.
