A 5.9 magnitude earthquake strikes eastern Türkiye

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — A moderately strong earthquake struck eastern Turkey on Wednesday, causing widespread panic, officials said. No serious injuries or major destruction were reported.

The 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck the town of Kali in Malatya province at 10:46 a.m. (07:46 GMT), according to the government-run Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency, known as AFAD.

The earthquake was felt by residents of neighboring provinces, including Diyarbakir, Elazig, Sanliurfa and Tunceli, as well as in some parts of northern Syria.

People rushed out of homes and offices in fear throughout the region. More than an hour after the earthquake, many were still waiting in the streets and parks, hesitant to return to their homes. Orders were issued to close schools in Malatya and Elazig.

Elazig Mayor Sahin Srivogulari said that about ten people were slightly injured after they jumped from windows in a state of panic. About 20 such incidents were reported in Malatya, Habertürk TV reported.

Malatya was one of 11 provinces destroyed by a strong earthquake that struck parts of Türkiye and northern Syria last year. More than 53 thousand people were killed in Türkiye.

Malatya Governor Cedar Yavuz said many buildings at risk of collapse had either been demolished or evacuated after the 2023 earthquake.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Administration said four buildings in Malatya, Şanlıurfa and Elazig were damaged on Wednesday. She added that in Elazig, four people were rescued unharmed from a building that was partially damaged.

Two major fault lines pass through Türkiye, and earthquakes are common. More than 17,000 people were killed in a strong earthquake that struck northwestern Türkiye in 1999.
