KCFD participates in “Great Shakeout” earthquake preparedness exercise | news

The Kern County Fire Department is participating in the 2024 Great ShakeOut, a statewide earthquake drill designed to enhance safety and preparedness in the event of a major earthquake. On October 17, 2024, at 10:17 a.m., our department will join millions across California in a “Drop, Cover and Hold” exercise to practice proper safety measures during an earthquake.

Earthquake Safety Tips: Be safe before, during and after an earthquake

The Kern County Fire Department encourages everyone to participate in the 2024 Great ShakeOut and follow these important earthquake safety tips.

During the earthquake:

Drop, cover and hold: Get down on your hands and knees, cover your head and neck with your arms, and if possible, take cover under a sturdy table or desk. Continue until the shaking stops.

Stay inside: If you are indoors, stay inside until the shaking ends. Stay away from windows, glass and heavy furniture.

Stay where you are: If you're in bed, stay there and protect your head with a pillow. If you are outside, move to an area free of buildings, trees, street lights and utility cords.

After the earthquake:

Be careful of aftershocks: Smaller earthquakes may follow the initial tremor. Be prepared to fall, cover and stick again.

Check for injuries and damage: Check yourself and others for injuries. Watch for structural damage, gas leaks, or electrical hazards, and evacuate if necessary.

STAY INFORMED: Use a battery-powered radio or your mobile device to receive updates and emergency alerts from local authorities.
