Video footage confirms Israeli forces have killed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar | BBC News

Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar has been killed by Israeli soldiers in southern Gaza, Israel has confirmed. The videos released by Israel show his body in the house where he was killed. Sinwar had led the Gaza-based militant group since 2017 and was described by Israel and the US as the mastermind of the October 7 attacks, when Hamas killed around 1,200 people in Israel and took 251 hostages. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said: “Today, as we promised, we settled the matter with him.” Israel's military said Sinwar was among three militants killed Wednesday in an attack on a building in Rafah that it believed was being used by senior Hamas members. Israel said Sinwar was spotted by chance by a military patrol in the city of Rafah, along with three other suspects, and seen entering a building. They say a drone followed him into the building and then killed the Hamas leader. Confirmation of his death was delayed for several hours as Israel compared dental records and fingerprints.
