“We depend more than ever on these lifeline systems to live, work, and communicate with each other,” Mullen said.

Finally, the bill calls for the USGS to update its seismic monitoring systems with new technology aimed at improving the prediction of aftershocks and earthquakes of large magnitude.

“Investing in preparedness now will save lives and save money in the future. That's why Congress must act to help ensure the nation is better prepared for the next disaster,” Mullen said.
