Seismic trio hits SoCal coast as 2024 sees a spike in earthquakes

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Three earthquakes — the strongest of which was a magnitude 3.6 — struck off the coast of Southern California over the weekend. The earthquakes came as the region witnessed a significant increase in major earthquakes this year.

Sunday's offshore quakes were centered roughly between Dana Point and San Clemente Island, more than 30 miles off the mainland coast. The first, 3.2, struck at 4:11 p.m., followed by 2.5 about five minutes later and 3.6 at 5:32 p.m., according to USGS data.

The shaking from the largest earthquake in the chain was felt as far north as the San Fernando Valley, as far east as Lake Elsinore and as far south as El Cajon. The shaking was most intense along the coast, from Redondo Beach to Del Mar, according to reports submitted to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quakes came as Southern California saw a significant increase in earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 or greater in 2024. As of mid-August, there had been 13 such quakes — nearly three times the average the state has seen over the course of 2024. A larger earthquake, measuring 4.7, occurred in Malibu after Jones conducted her assessment. While that still makes 2024 more of an anomaly compared to recent years, seismologists say the numbers are still within the normal range.

“2024 is closer to normal than the calm of the past two decades,” Jones wrote.

Regardless, earthquake experts say there is no prediction of exactly when the “big earthquake” will occur.

There are two theories: that seismic activity increases in an area before a large earthquake, or that seismic activity decreases before a large earthquake, the Los Angeles Times reported.

However, SoCal is still at risk of a large, damaging earthquake of magnitude 6.0 or greater because the region has not seen an earthquake of this magnitude in a long time — and the faults create stress, said Stephen DeLong, a geologist at the USGS Earthquake Science Center. For SFGATE.
