A small earthquake swarm near Santa Catalina Island, Southern California

A series of small earthquakes struck offshore Santa Catalina Island on 20 and 21 October, the largest being a M3.6 at 00:32 UTC on 21 October at a depth of 5.8 km (3.6 mi).

The shaking was initiated by an M3.2 earthquake at 23:11 UTC, 43 km (27 mi) from Avalon at a depth of 5.8 km (3.6 mi) and was followed by an M2.5 aftershock just 4 minutes later at a depth of 5.2 km (3.2 mi). .

The M3.6 earthquake occurred 43 km (27 mi) from Dana Point, 48 km (30 mi) from San Clemente, and 51 km (32 mi) from both Laguna Beach and San Juan Capistrano.

This fluctuation in depth could affect the intensity of the shaking felt on the ground, although reports indicate people were not significantly disturbed.
