Patients transferred, critical supplies rejected as high-risk, in joint WHO-led mission in northern Gaza amid intense hostilities

Patients transferred, critical supplies rejected as high-risk, in joint WHO-led mission in northern Gaza amid intense hostilities

On 21 October, 14 patients and 10 caregivers were transferred from Kamal Adwan in North Gaza to Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City during a high-risk joint WHO-led mission, amid intense hostilities and restricted access. Despite the initial agreement, the delivery of critical medical supplies, blood and fuel – resources essential to keeping Kamal Adwan and Al-Awda hospitals operational – was denied just hours before the mission began on October 20.

The mission lasted two days, and the team faced delays at successive checkpoints and during extensive security checks. The team was forced to stay overnight at Kamal Adwan Hospital, as they were not allowed to proceed to Al-Shifa Hospital due to the active conflict in the area. Heavy shelling continued near the hospital throughout the night, causing distress to patients, health workers and the mission team. The team was only able to proceed to Al-Shifa Hospital around noon on October 21. On the way to Al-Shifa, all patients were taken out of the ambulance for a safety check. Some patients on stretchers were left lying on the ground for some time during screening, while some of the partner's staff were subjected to humiliating treatment.

This was the fourth WHO mission to northern Gaza since 1 October. As of this month, of the 21 missions requested by the WHO, only 6 have been enabled, and most have been rejected or disabled.

Kamal Adwan Hospital remains partially functional but is struggling to meet increasing needs due to increased hostilities in the north and shortages of medical supplies and fuel. Earlier today, October 22, a strike was reported near the hospital that caused damage to the door. There are currently 95 patients in the hospital, of which 15 are in intensive care (four of whom require continuous life support), seven of whom are children. In the last two days, at least 200 seriously injured and 53 dead bodies were delivered to the already overcrowded hospital. Damaged roads, combined with ongoing hostilities, seriously impede safe access to the hospital. If patients, ambulances and health workers cannot reach the facility, and partners cannot supply it, the hospital could soon become dysfunctional.

As hostilities intensify in Northern Gaza, WHO is deeply concerned about the last two functioning hospitals – Kamal Adwan and Al-Awda – which must be protected. A complete lack of health care in northern Gaza would worsen an already catastrophic situation and lead to the loss of more lives.

A year later, health care remains under attack and denied supplies and fuel, while the WHO's ability to reach health facilities regularly is severely compromised by mission delays and denials.

WHO reiterates its call for unhindered access to health facilities, reliable and timely mission facilitation, sustainable flow of aid in and through Gaza, protection of health care and above all a ceasefire.
