The Canary Islands are under “continuous monitoring” after the earthquake in Tenerife

Residents of the Canary Islands reported feeling tremors after an earthquake struck Tenerife this week. Spain's national geographical agency, the National Geographic Institute (IGN), recorded a new earthquake on Monday 21 October, which occurred at around 3.45pm.

Its strength reached 3.1 on the Richter scale, and although this is not considered high, members of the public could feel the tremors, news website Canarian Weekly reported. The epicenter of the earthquake was in the northern part of the island.

This is not the first earthquake to be felt in recent weeks. On October 17, a 3.3 magnitude earthquake was reported on the southern coast of Gran Canaria. Last September, Gran Canaria was hit by the strongest earthquake in 60 years, with a 3.8 magnitude quake rocking the island on September 10.

The tremor was felt in 14 of the island's 21 municipalities, and it was described as the most violent in six decades. No major damage was reported.

Regarding the recent earthquake, Canarian Weekly said: “This event adds to the series of recent earthquakes recorded in the Canary Islands, which are subject to continuous seismic monitoring to better understand the geological dynamics of the archipelago.” Seismic activity” in recent years, especially in Tenerife, “has raised concerns about potential volcanic activity” but “experts confirm that these events remain within the normal volcanic behavior of the region.”
