A 5.0-meter earthquake hits Wandamu Bay in West Papua at midnight, BMKG reports.

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that an earthquake struck the northern coast of the Wandama Bay region of West Papua at midnight on Friday, October 25, 2024. The magnitude of the earthquake was 5.0. It struck just 22 minutes into the day on Friday at 00:22 AM local time.

“It is a type of shallow earthquake due to active faults,” according to the official statement issued by BMKG after the earthquake.

The epicenter of the earthquake was at sea, 55 kilometers northwest of Wandama Bay, at a depth of 10 kilometers. BMKG said the tremor had a sliding motion.

Based on the seismic map, the earthquake was felt in the Wendama Bay area on the II-III MMI intensity scale. People inside homes felt the earthquake, as if trucks were passing by. The BMKG team confirmed that this earthquake does not pose any possibility of a tsunami.

“No aftershock was detected as of 00:55 a.m. local time,” BMKG said.
