CWA expects earthquakes of magnitude 4 and above

The Central Weather Administration (CWA) yesterday warned the public of possible earthquakes with a magnitude of 4 or more on the Richter scale this week in Chiayi Province after a wave of earthquakes with a magnitude of 4.5 or more shook the province.

A total of eight tremors with a magnitude of 4.5 or higher were felt in the county's Gongbu township yesterday, with the largest quake measuring 4.9 occurring at 2:56 p.m., the earthquake authority said.

“We felt three of the quakes noticeably. They had magnitudes of 4.8, 4.5 and 4.9, respectively,” Lin Tzu Wei (林祖慰), a specialist at the bureau's seismic center, said at a news conference in Taipei yesterday afternoon.

“The largest of these three occurred at a depth of 5 kilometers. He added that the other five tremors were smaller in size and ranged in magnitude between 3.1 and 3.8 degrees.

He said the earthquakes occurred due to the collision and thrust of the Philippine Sea plate and the Eurasian plate. When the two plates collided, the energy moved toward the western half of Taiwan, he said.

The epicenter of the 7.1 magnitude earthquake that struck the county in 1941 was slightly higher than the epicenter of yesterday's quake.

Some experts had previously issued warnings, saying that since a large-scale earthquake had not occurred in the region in more than 70 years, a major earthquake was expected there.
