Colorado isn't really known as an “earthquake” state like California, but you might be surprised by the number of earthquakes recorded by the USGS. Most of them are very small, but one in October 2024 was enough to be felt.

Earthquakes are an easy reminder that we are merely inhabitants of this planet; Because it will vibrate to keep you on your toes. Even though we haven't had a major earthquake in some time, it's still a bit scary.

As the last Saturday of October 2024 begins in 2024, an earthquake occurs in southern Colorado. It was North Trinidad at 12:28 a.m. when it struck.

The U.S. Geological Service registered the quake as a magnitude 3.4, a “relatively mild” magnitude, but still enough to surprise some people in the area. No damages or injuries were reported as a result of this earthquake.

In 2019, a smaller earthquake (2.7 magnitude) occurred near Gypsum in Eagle County. It happened later in the day, around 8:00 AM. We don't generally hear about earthquakes occurring in the afternoon, for whatever reason.

I remember when my family first moved to Colorado, we lived in Longmont; A small earthquake occurred. I remember a small television set falling and the “rabbit ears” antennas going off. My mother was scared, that's for sure.

Since Colorado is known for its catastrophic wildfires, hurricanes, and floods, getting news of a small earthquake can be a nice distraction.

2023 was a relatively mild year for earthquakes in the Centennial State. Three events managed to reach magnitude 4.0 or higher on the Richter scale, and all but one of Colorado's major earthquakes were centered within a few miles of each other.
