We felt a weird earthquake in this southern Illinois field

I think someone on a tractor in southern Illinois got a surprise Thursday when they felt a strange quake in a farm field near the lower end of the state.

I was on the USGS website doing research on something completely different when I noticed a notice of an earthquake in the southern part of Illinois. Unlike most New Madrid earthquakes that were centered in the southern part of Missouri, this earthquake was in a remote farm field northeast of Olean, Illinois. The USGS says it was only a 2.0 magnitude earthquake, but it was felt around 10:40 a.m. on Thursday, October 31.

According to Google Street View Maps, that would place the quake in or near this farm field in Illinois.

This places the recognized moderate epicenter in Illinois between the Wabash Valley Seismic Zone and the notorious New Madrid Seismic Zone. So what do we take credit for this little shake-up? Choose what suits you. I think this is going to be a simple New Madrid bug cough, but last time I checked I wasn't an earthquake specialist.

It's just another event in southern Illinois and Missouri where you never know exactly what the ground beneath you is going to do. Prepare for the unexpected.
