The state of Victoria was rocked by a 3.6 magnitude earthquake early in the morning caused by mines

Activity at a mine near Bendigo is responsible for the strong earthquake that struck the Victoria area early Tuesday morning.

The 3.6 magnitude quake struck Elmore, about 45 kilometers north-east of Bendigo, at 6.41am.

The Fosterville Gold Mine, located about 20 minutes from Elmore, said it recorded a “mine-triggered seismic event.”

“Mine earthquakes are very complex, and the mechanisms are similar to earthquakes, but they are linked to our mining activities,” a company spokesperson told 7NEWS.com.au.

“Our people are safe and we have protocols in place to respond to these underground events, which we are currently working to implement.”

The Fosterville Mine is Victoria's largest gold producer and began operations in 2005.

More than a dozen people reported feeling the earthquake.

In August, the state of Victoria was hit by two earthquakes in the same week.

The first magnitude 3.0 earthquake occurred on August 26 near Wilson Promontory.

The second earthquake, with a magnitude of 3.4, occurred three days later in Hamilton.

Seismic activity has risen in Victoria since a 5.9 magnitude earthquake in September 2021 damaged buildings in Melbourne and was felt across the country's south-eastern states.

The earthquake was the strongest reported in metropolitan Melbourne in more than a century.
