Strong earthquakes have been reported off the coast of Cuba resulting in a small tsunami threat

Two major earthquakes were reported off the coast of Cuba on Sunday morning. Although there is no widespread threat of a tsunami, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there is a limited threat of a tsunami along the coasts closest to the epicenter.

HAVANA, Cuba — Two strong earthquakes were reported off Cuba late Sunday morning, prompting officials to warn of a small tsunami threat.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the two earthquakes were reported within one hour of each other.

The first was a magnitude 5.9 reported just before 11 a.m. ET, about 22 miles south of Bartolomé Masso, Cuba, at a depth of about 9 miles.

The second quake, the stronger of the two, was reported an hour before noon ET. This earthquake had a magnitude of 6.8 and was centered about 25 miles south of Bartolomé Masso at a depth of about 8 miles.

Shortly after the second earthquake was reported, the National Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) in Honolulu issued an alert stating that although there was no significant tsunami threat, “there is a very low probability of tsunami waves along the coasts closest to the epicenter.” “Earthquake.”

The National Tsunami Warning Center (NWS) in Palmer, Alaska, said there was no tsunami threat on the U.S. East Coast, the Gulf of Mexico or the East Coast of Canada.

The Committee for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (PTWC) said this would be its only notification, and national authorities would determine the appropriate level of alerts for each country and may issue additional or more precise information.

Tremors from the earthquakes were reported across the region, with people in Jamaica also reporting feeling the ground move late Sunday morning.

Jamaica's Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) posted on social media that a moderate tremor had been reported across the island.

A short time later, ODPEM said there was no tsunami threat as a result of the quake.

It is not known if any damage, injuries or deaths were reported as a result of the earthquakes.

According to the USGS, earthquakes are very common in the area where Sunday's quakes were reported.

Over the past 50 years, there have been 23 other earthquakes of magnitude 5 or larger, including a magnitude 7.7 quake reported on Jan. 28, 2020, about 115 miles west of Sunday's quake, the USGS said.
