5.1 magnitude earthquake in southern West Java Sea; BMKG: Because of the activities of the Indo-Australian Board

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded a 5.1 magnitude earthquake originating from waters south of West Java on the morning of Wednesday, November 13, 2024. BMKG Director of Earthquakes and Tsunami, Daryono stated that the earthquake was detected at 08:41 a.m. Local time, it came from a depth of 90 kilometers in the Indian Ocean, from a point about 137 kilometers southwest of Pangandaran.

“It is a moderate type of earthquake due to deformation of rocks within the Indo-Australian plate (between the slabs),” he said in a written statement after the incident.

According to Dariono, the earthquake had an oblique thrust mechanism. Referring to the BMKG vibration map, the earthquake was felt in the areas of Garut, Cianjur, Seuidi, Tasikmalaya and Pangandaran.

The vibration scale was III MMI, meaning it was felt inside the house as if a truck was passing. This earthquake was also felt by residents of Bandung, West Bandung and Cimahi with intensity scale II MMI, or caused lightweight hanging objects to sway. “Modeling results indicate that this earthquake does not have the potential to cause a tsunami,” Dariono said.

The BMKG team also did not record any aftershocks as of 09:10 AM local time. As in previous warnings, Dariono advised the public to avoid buildings with cracks or damage, and to make sure their homes are earthquake-resistant.
