“Brene earthquake” recorded by 80 local residents

Locals in the Bryne area near Bandon were awakened on Tuesday morning by a sudden sound that turned out to be a small earthquake.

Those who experienced the 5.50am quake took to social media to report it, with some believing the noise may have come from a nearby quarry, while others said their homes were shaken by it.

The permanent seismic station, used to monitor earthquakes in and around the country, discovered that it was in fact a small earthquake. Speaking to the Southern Star, Dr Patrick Smith from the Irish National Seismic Network (INSN) said they detected the quake about 5km north-east of Bandon, at a very shallow depth, about 1km below the surface.

He said: “There is no need to worry, because earthquakes of this size (magnitude 1.6) are not uncommon in Ireland, but they do not cause any damage.”

He added that severe damage to buildings and infrastructure usually only occurs in earthquakes of magnitude 5.0 and above, depending on the depth and distance to the epicenter.

While such an event in the south of Ireland is highly unusual, the previous earthquake felt in West Cork was a 2.2 metre-magnitude earthquake, in Courtamasherry in December 2013. Dr Smith said the center typically detects around 20 earthquakes a year in Ireland, with the majority occurring In North Donegal.

“Tuesday's earthquake appears to have been felt by some people in the Bandon/Crosbury area and so far we have received around 80 reports from members of the public,” he said. The event was also recorded on citizen science seismometers in the south and west of the country, provided by the Dublin Institute for Advanced Study.
