As Israel and Hezbollah agree to a ceasefire, I wanted to offer some strategic thoughts based on my recent visit to the region.

From November 3 to 7, I was part of a small group of national security and military experts who visited Israel. Our program there included field visits to the IDF headquarters in the north and south of the country, a visit to the combat training center for the IDF ground forces, a short mission to Gaza, in addition to a visit to an IDF air base in the south of the country. As I have highlighted throughout this series, there is much to be learned from Israel's response to the terrible events of October 7, 2023, when Hamas terrorists breached the border wall in southern Israel and slaughtered Israeli civilians and military personnel. After my first visit to Israel two months after the events of that day, I wrote in an article in December 2023:

With more than 14 months having passed since the Hamas massacre, the more strategic implications of this seismic event for Middle Eastern affairs have become clear. While the strategic situation continues to evolve, including today's announcement by Israel of a ceasefire with Hezbollah, my recent visit to Israel has provided me with some strategic insights that I will reflect on in this article.
