Tsunami warning was lifted after millions of Californians were told to evacuate their homes following a 7.0 magnitude earthquake.

A tsunami warning has been lifted affecting nearly 5 million people on the US West Coast, after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake was reported in Northern California.

The National Weather Service said that about 4.7 million residents of California and Oregon received a tsunami warning before it was cancelled.

The earthquake was felt as far south as San Francisco, where residents felt a rolling motion for several seconds.

This was followed by smaller aftershocks.

The US Geological Survey said the quake was centered in Ferndale, a small city in coastal Humboldt County near the Oregon border, and was at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The earthquake's magnitude was originally reported at 6.6 but was revised to 7.0.

The tsunami warning was issued shortly after the quake and covered approximately 805 kilometers of coastline, from the edge of Monterey Bay in California northward to Oregon.

Evacuations are underway as a precaution

Many cities carried out evacuations as a precaution, urging residents to move to higher areas or inland.

Eureka Mayor Kim Bergel said crews were assessing damage from the quake.

There have been no reports so far of major damage or injuries.

The lights were swaying and everyone sat under desks, said C.R. Bergel, who works as a middle school resource assistant.

“The kids were so adorable and terrified. It seemed like it was going back and forth for a long time,” she said.

The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District, known as BART, halted traffic in all directions through the underwater tunnel between San Francisco and Oakland.

Visitors to the San Francisco Zoo were also evacuated, the zoo said in a post on social media platform X.

The animals were secured and employees were moved to higher ground.

Shortly after the quake, phones in Northern California rang with a tsunami warning, which has now been canceled by the National Weather Service.

“A series of strong waves and strong currents may affect coastlines near you. You are at risk. Stay away from coastal waters. Move to higher ground or inland now. Stay away from the coast until local officials say it is safe to return.”
