Tsunami warning ends after 7.0 magnitude California earthquake; WA was not affected

The warning was briefly in effect for the Oregon coast south of Florence and into northern California.

SEATTLE – A tsunami warning briefly issued for southern Oregon and northern California did not affect Washington state.

The warning has since expired. It was caused by a large earthquake that struck the California coast.

An earthquake struck off the coast of Humboldt County, California, around 10:45 a.m. Thursday, with a preliminary magnitude of 7.0, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. That's about five hours northwest of Sacramento. People reported feeling the quake hundreds of miles from the coast.

A tsunami warning was briefly issued for the Oregon coast south of Florence, down to Santa Cruz, California.

The warning, delivered to the phones of people in the affected area, read: “A series of strong waves and strong currents may affect coastlines near you. You are in danger. Stay away from coastal waters. Move to higher ground or inland now. Stay away from the coast Even local officials say it's safe to return.

Washington state seismologist Harold Tobin said that although a tsunami did not occur, it was the right decision for the government to issue it because of the size of the quake and its proximity to the coast.

Geologists later learned that the quake was what they call a “slip strike” earthquake in which tectonic plates move side by side. These types of earthquakes do not have as large a water-lifting effect as other types of earthquakes.

“It's less likely, but not impossible, that a tsunami could occur,” Tobin said.

After issuing the earthquake warning, scientists monitored the arrival of the tsunami wave either through buoy activity, or on the nearest areas along the coast, and when they did not notice any activity, they let the warning expire.

“It became clear and obvious that nothing serious had actually happened from a tsunami standpoint,” Tobin said.
