Northern California earthquake: Humboldt County cleans up after 'unwelcome roller coaster'

HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Calif. (KGO) — Humboldt County was the epicenter of a large 7.0 magnitude earthquake. Many are cleaning up the big mess left by the huge earthquake but are thankful it wasn't worse.

Twenty-four hours after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit the North Coast on Thursday, the damage is starting to come into focus. Like a huge crack opened up on Blue Slide Road in Rio Dell. Other damage cleanup operations have occurred here as well.

This was the largest earthquake to hit Northern California in decades, and residents were struck by dozens of aftershocks. Reservoirs opened, swimming pools overflowed and roads cracked.

A Rio Dell Public Works crew was trying to repair a crack that opened on Blue Slide Road. It is about 20 feet long, due to the large vibrator.

“I was in this situation, stocking up on these pumpkin pies. I thought someone was messing with me and shaking the cooler,” April Ness said.

Ness said the earthquake was no joke. She works at Hoby's Market in Scotia where employees were told to evacuate when the shaking started.

“My manager comes in and tells everyone to get out. I'm literally tiptoeing, trying to walk like this, because the floor goes up and down. I'm from Kentucky. I know tornadoes, but I don't know earthquakes,” Ness said.

Ness shared photos of the huge mess he left behind. She says about 30% of grocery inventory has been destroyed.

“Our priority was to clear the floors enough that we could bring people in, so they could eat in and get food and groceries,” Ness said.

A sign at the Dollar General store in Rio Dell says “Closed until further notice,” and for good reason. We saw a lot of items scattered on the floor and in the hallways.

Workers took shelter in City Hall when the earthquake struck. City Manager Kyle Knopp was there as well.

“Big shaking. This was definitely an unwelcome, rolling type of earthquake,” Knoop said.

Knopp said his staff is still looking for damage in the city but has not found anything major, compared to the earthquake in 2022, which left homes with red marks.

“I think we were very lucky,” Knoop said. “This earthquake could have been much more damaging and more significant.”

City officials are urging homeowners and businesses who suffered damage to report it. Meanwhile everyone agrees. They were lucky without any injuries or serious damage.
