Scientists monitor the Alaska volcano after earthquakes rise beneath it US News

Geologists are monitoring a volcano near Alaska's largest city after increased seismicity beneath it, which could indicate an upcoming eruption.

Spur Mountain last erupted in 1992, spewing a cloud of ash 19 kilometers high into the air, forcing flights to be canceled and people in Anchorage forced to wear masks.

Another eruption of the 11,100-foot (3,383-meter) stratovolcano could severely disrupt the city, which is located about 80 miles (129 km) away, according to the Alaska Volcano Observatory.

The observatory raised Mount Spur's alert status from green to yellow in October, when the increase in seismic activity became more apparent and scientists detected ground deformation in satellite data.

There have been about 1,500 small earthquakes under the volcano so far this year, compared to about 100 in a normal year, according to observatory scientist David V.

Although this may seem like a lot, he said, “it's not a huge amount.”

It may or may not be a precursor to a volcanic eruption – similar seismic disturbances occurred from 2004 to 2006, but they subsided without an eruption.

“We don't see any significant change in our data that would tell us that an eruption is imminent,” Mr. Fei said.

“Things have been kind of low-level disruption for a while and we are of course monitoring it closely to detect any changes and what that might mean.”

Geologists alert to changes that indicate an impending eruption

By monitoring seismic stations, global satellite and webcam data, geologists look for additional changes that would indicate an impending eruption.

Moving magma near the surface may increase earthquakes, ground deformations, and create a summit lake or vents that open in the surface to vent gas and vapors.

When the volcano last erupted, about a quarter-inch of ash fell on Anchorage that year.

Mount Spurr is located on the volcanic ring of fire. It is one of 53 volcanoes in Alaska that have been active in the past 250 years.
