Update: A 5.7 magnitude earthquake was felt near Yerington in the Carson Valley

A series of earthquakes occurred northeast of Yerington as reported by the Nevada Seismological Laboratory.

The Carson Valley was hit by a 5.7-magnitude earthquake centered northeast of Yerington at 3:12 p.m., according to the United Nations Seismic Laboratory in Nevada.

The epicenter was located 16 miles north of Yerington near where a 3.84 magnitude earthquake was reported on December 4.

seismo.unr.edu shows a 5.7 and 5.8 magnitude quake about a mile apart within one second of each other.

The Record-Courier contacted the seismic laboratory to find out if these were actual earthquakes or an artifact signal.

Nearly 40 aftershocks were recorded over the next hour and 20 minutes. The largest was 4.17 at 4:39 p.m

Kara Easton, Douglas County emergency manager, said there were no reports of damage from the quake.

The USGS reported more than 10,000 responses to the Did You Feel It site, and three-quarters of those responses were posted in the first 20 minutes.

One participant reported feeling the earthquake in Indian Springs, 264 miles away. Another participant reported feeling the quake in Lovelock, 84 miles away. Minden is located 31 miles from the epicenter.

Seven Glenbrook residents reported feeling the earthquake.

The area is part of the Walker Lane that runs along the eastern slope of the Sierra Range, a deformation belt that consumes 15-25 percent of the boundary movement between the North American and Pacific tectonic plates. The rest is taken by the San Andreas Fault in California.

It's been four days since a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Cape Mendocino, California, triggering a tsunami warning for the West Coast.

This earthquake occurred just west of the Mendocino Triple Junction, where the northern end of the San Andreas plate between the Pacific and North American plates meets the southern end of the Cascadia subduction zone.

According to the USGS, “of the 11 magnitude 7 and larger earthquakes in California since 1900, five (including the 2024 event) occurred in the vicinity of the Mendocino Triple Junction.”
