Nevada earthquake felt in California: Why was the shaking different?

The whole answer lies in the frequency of the waves that reach people.

CALIFORNIA, USA – While many were stunned during the recent earthquakes felt in California, some may also find themselves curious. Specifically, some may wonder why they experience two different types of vibration.

It has to do with the frequency of waves reaching people, says Dr. Angie Lux, a seismologist with the Earthquake Early Warning System at UC Berkeley.

“Last week's earthquake was a long way away. The dominant motion that you will feel very far from last week's M7.0 earthquake is the slow, long waves, which can travel a really long distance,” says Dr. Lux said. “The faster the vibration, back and forth, the higher frequency vibration we call it weakens. It fades away faster. But those long-range waves, they travel much farther.”

While the M7.0 that shook California only happened last week, Lux said they don't expect there to be any connection between that and the M5.8 in Nevada.

“They're very far away seismically, so I don't think the earthquake in Nevada today is the result of an M7.0 earthquake,” Lux said.

She added that although this type of earthquake may seem scary, it is still considered a moderate earthquake for its size.

“Earthquakes happen all the time, many times in places where people don't feel them, and that's why they don't generate any news — because they happen far away out there. But yeah, I would say none of that activity,” Lux said. “What we saw last week was unusual”.
