A 5.8 magnitude earthquake strikes near Yerington, quickly followed by several aftershocks | Local news

Multiple aftershocks were felt in parts of northern Nevada after a 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck 16 miles north-northeast of Yerington Monday afternoon.

The US Geological Survey says the quake occurred at 3:08 p.m. and was followed within minutes by additional earthquakes that have continued since then.

As of the time of writing, the agency reported that the region had witnessed nearly 160 earthquakes, most of which occurred on Monday and the beginning of Tuesday.

The seismic laboratory at the University of Nevada, Reno says we will feel aftershocks within the next two weeks. Central Nevada is prone to larger earthquakes, so they weren't surprised by this, but they are monitoring things in the area.

“In Reno, we have large fault lines running through the city, and the Mount Rose fault is one of the faults that we monitor closely. There is also a large fault line in the Lake Tahoe area, which we feel a lot of earthquakes from,” says Professor Christy Rowe, director of the Nevada Seismological Laboratory. “They are definitely capable of generating earthquakes in the 6 to 7 range and that is what we are trying to prepare for and prepare for.”

UNR says the quake was felt as far away as San Francisco and at least 32 aftershocks were recorded, with more expected “possibly lasting for weeks.”

The quake occurred at a depth of about 11.5 kilometers, or 7 miles, in a fault zone known as the Wabuska Line. It was a left-sided earthquake. The Wabuska Line is one of a group of faults that strike northeast in the mountains east of Reno. Such earthquakes have been occurring in this area, known as the Walker Lane Shire, which follows the border between California and Nevada, for millions of years. The Pacific tectonic plates move northwest relative to the North American tectonic plates, and while most of this occurs along the San Andreas Fault, they also cause deformation farther east in the crust of western Nevada creating a complex network of faults in Walker Lane.

Anyone who felt the quake is asked to fill out a form on the USGS website indicating the severity of the tremors at their location.

The Nevada Division of Emergency Management is coordinating with local and state partners to assess the effects of the earthquake.
