A group of earthquakes and aftershocks shook Alaska's Western Aleutian Islands on Sunday.

Scientists at the Alaska Earthquake Center are monitoring an unusually high number of moderate earthquakes near Adak Island. About 12 tremors with a magnitude ranging between 6.3 and 5 occurred during the hours of Sunday.

Residents describe the tremor as “mild” and “weak” but remain alert, checking emergency supplies and monitoring ongoing activity.

Scientists say large earthquakes are common in the Aleutian region, where the Pacific plate is moving beneath the North American plate. While this swarm did not cause concern, its location near historic earthquake sites did attract attention. They expect aftershocks in the region, especially of magnitude 5 and smaller, to continue for days or weeks. The earthquake center reported about 100 aftershocks near Adak as of Monday morning, which they say is typical after earthquakes measuring 6 on the Richter scale.

A magnitude 5 earthquake struck to the east near King Cove and False Pass on Monday morning. Scientists say the quake was likely not caused by earthquakes near Adak due to the distance between the sites.

The swarm comes on the heels of a 7.0 magnitude earthquake off the coast of California last week. Scientists at the United States Geological Survey say the events are unrelated, as California and the Aleutian Islands have different tectonic plates and fault systems.
