Northern California earthquake shakes water in Devil's Hole | news

DEATH VALLEY – A massive earthquake rocked Northern California's Devil's Hole in Death Valley National Park last week. Scientists are still evaluating potential impacts on the endangered Devils Hole Pupfish.

The 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast near Cape Mendocino at 10:44 a.m. on December 5. About two minutes later, water began flowing into Devil's Hole, about 500 miles from the epicenter. Scientists estimate that the waves, technically known as seiche, were about two feet high.

The water at Devils Hole is usually still, since the pool is protected from the wind at the bottom of the collapsed cave. These rare waves disrupted the shallow shelf that is the main spawning area for Devils Hole Pupfish, washing most of the organic material from the shelf into the cave more than 500 feet deep.

“In the short term, this is bad for the pupfish,” said Dr. Kevin Wilson, a biologist with the National Park Service. “A lot of the little fish's food has sunk deep into the cave, and it's probably too deep for the fish to get to. There were probably little fish eggs that were destroyed on the shelf. But, in the long run, this kind of reset is beneficial.” To pup fish you have cleaned up any decaying organic matter that could be causing pockets of low oxygen.

Pupfish have survived several periods of time during the species' evolution, most recently in 2018, 2019, and 2022. It has reacted to similar disturbances in the past by increasing egg-laying activity.

However, Wilson is not risking the survival of the Devils Hole pupfish species, which has no other natural habitat. The last survey counted 212 fish in September. The National Park Service, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Nevada Department of Wildlife biologists are evaluating how to mitigate the disturbance to the fish, which are also affected by groundwater pumping and climate change.
