Earthquake map shows 9 states struck on the same morning

A seismic map released by the US Geological Survey (USGS) showed that minor earthquakes struck nine states on Friday morning.

The quakes come a week after a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Northern California, sending shockwaves that were felt miles away. The quake was strong enough to issue a tsunami warning, although the warning was canceled shortly after it was issued. Aftershocks continued in Northern California, and minor earthquakes struck the states of Utah, Nevada, Idaho, Texas, Kansas, Alaska, New Mexico, and Washington on Friday morning.

California is perhaps the state most known for earthquakes, as the Golden State has the highest number of damaging earthquakes in the country. However, earthquakes are often reported in other states as well. The map below shows where the earthquakes occurred on Friday:

When looking at earthquake data over the past 30 days, next to California, it appears that earthquakes frequently strike Nevada, Utah, Idaho, Texas, and Oklahoma.

Over the past week, the strongest earthquakes have struck California and Nevada. As for the earthquakes that struck on Friday morning, they were likely not strong enough to cause any damage.

“A temporary increase or decrease in seismic activity is part of the natural fluctuation of earthquake rates,” a USGS spokesperson told Newsweek. “A worldwide increase or decrease is not considered a positive indicator that a major earthquake is imminent.”

California earthquakes

Several earthquakes measuring 3.0 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of Petrolia on Friday morning, near where the 7.0 quake struck last week. As of around noon ET on Friday, one person reported feeling the quakes.

Utah earthquake

A 2.7 magnitude earthquake struck about 6 miles northeast of Hildale just before 9 a.m. local time Friday morning. According to the USGS, no one reported feeling the quake.

The US Geological Survey said damage usually does not occur until an earthquake reaches a magnitude of about 4 or 5.

Nevada earthquakes

A 3.3 magnitude earthquake struck near Yerington. A 3.0 magnitude earthquake also struck the area. Around noon ET, someone reported feeling the 3.3 magnitude earthquake.

Alaska earthquakes

Alaska is frequently exposed to earthquakes. On Friday morning, at least two cases were reported in the state. The strongest was a magnitude 3.5 that struck about 38 miles southeast of Old Port. One person reported feeling the quake on the USGS website.

Idaho earthquake

No one reported feeling the 2.6 magnitude quake that struck west and northwest of Stanley on Friday morning.

Texas earthquake

The U.S. Geological Survey reported that at least six people felt a 2.5 magnitude earthquake near Falls City. Falls City is located southeast of San Antonio.

Kansas earthquake

A 2.6 magnitude earthquake struck Jewell Friday morning near the Kansas-Nebraska border. No one reported feeling the vibrations.

New Mexico earthquake

A 2.5 magnitude earthquake in New Mexico did not cause any reports of tremors. It was struck near the city of Whites.

Washington earthquake

A 2.5 magnitude earthquake struck near Brady. No one has reported shaking at the USGS site yet.
