A 1.6 magnitude earthquake struck Burlington last night, Thursday, December 12, shaking homes and scaring a few residents.

At approximately 5:30 p.m., residents near the lake near Appleby reported a loud bang and their home shaking.

“It was small, and I appreciate that it can be scary, especially since people felt it,” said Nick Ackerley, a seismologist with Earthquakes Canada. “Given that people felt it, it suggests that it was all relatively superficial.”

The exact coordinates of the earthquake are 43.39°N, -79.74°W, which places the earthquake behind Ryder Used Truck Sales on Superior Ct.

Akerley added that a similar event occurred in May, but it was also a sub-2 magnitude earthquake.

“It was probably a few kilometers deep, and we've seen this kind of thing before where a very small earthquake can be felt in populated areas like Burlington or Oakville.”

Residents posted on Facebook and Reddit about the event last night, saying they think it may have had something to do with Metrolinx construction, or a frostquake.

“We don't think it has anything to do with the ice or the frost quake,” Ackerley said.

Steve Dewey, a Burlington resident who felt the quake, said neighbors came out of their homes to see what was happening.

“All the neighbors seemed to indicate that the explosion was coming from different directions,” Dewey said. “It came from our south-facing house, and we thought it came from the east. Our neighbor right next door said it came from the west.”

The Halton Regional Police Service also confirmed that it has not received any reports of injuries or damage due to last night's earthquake.
