11 months after the Noto Peninsula earthquake, a couple decided to place their daughter's ashes in the grave

Kanazawa, (Japan): A couple from Sanda, Hyogo Prefecture, whose daughter died in the Wajima morning market fire caused by the Noto Peninsula earthquake nearly a year ago, decided to place the urn containing her ashes in her grave ahead of their first anniversary. Her death.

Tomio Shimada, 73, and his wife Yuko, 66, kept the remains of their daughter Rina with them, because they still could not accept her death.

In the hope that “a lot of people will be able to meet Rena”, who died at the age of 36, they made the decision to place her ashes in the grave.

Rina was a Wajima maki-e craftsman, and her home and workshop were located in the Asaichi-dori area where the Wajima morning market is held.

Rina usually returns to her hometown during the New Year holiday period, but she told her parents that she would be too busy to visit this year.

Shortly after noon on January 1, Rina posted photos in a Line group chat of New Year's dishes she had prepared, including chestnut kurikinton and namasu desserts, along with a message saying: “I worked hard on the presentation.”

Four hours later, the earthquake occurred. Rena's parents tried to call her, but her phone went unanswered and line messages were left unread.

They tried to convince themselves that she was sheltering in place somewhere or was in a hospital somewhere due to amnesia.

However, on January 10, police informed her that human bones had been discovered in the rubble of her home.

Rina's parents were able to go to Wajima three days later.

The area where Rena lived was reduced to charred ruins. In February, DNA analysis confirmed that the discovered remains were hers.

According to her parents, Rina loved drawing, and from a young age she would often draw pictures of animals and cartoon characters.

I started taking art classes in middle school and made sure to choose a high school that had an art department.

“She loved school. She even went there on Saturdays and Sundays to do things like draw and participate in student council activities.

Rina learned about maki-e in high school. She quickly took up the craft and continued studying maki-e at a small college in Akita.

Since 2008, she has been enhancing her skills at the Wajima Painting Arts Institute of Ishikawa Prefecture in Wajima.

After graduating, she interned with artist Maki E. While working part-time to earn a living, she threw herself into the craft.

She became independent in 2018, and received so many maki-e orders that she was able to support herself without sending any money from her parents.

Most of Rina's works were destroyed in the fire, but about 100 pieces already delivered to customers remained intact.

Thanks to the generosity of her business partners, many of them were sent to her parents, who learned of the popularity of her unusual style.

Reyna's family remembers her every day. They will never forget the family trip they took with her to Kyoto and her smiling face whenever she was home.

Her parents decided to place their daughter's ashes in a grave near the family home, hoping that her friends from elementary, middle and high school as well as college would come to visit her.
