A 2.8 magnitude earthquake strikes Southern California
A 2.8-magnitude earthquake struck the Los Angeles area Monday morning, sending weak tremors from its epicenter in the Alhambra.
“Weak” shaking, as defined by the Modified Mercalli intensity scale, may have been felt in places such as downtown Los Angeles, Burbank, Pasadena, East Los Angeles, South Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, and Universal City.
In Highland Park, there was a gentle shaking that lasted for about three seconds, similar to when a large truck passes by a house or when a helicopter flies through the neighborhood. But in other places, such as Glendale, the tremors were so mild that some people did not initially feel them as an earthquake.
The initial epicenter of Monday's quake, which was recorded at 10:04 a.m., was near the corner of Valley Boulevard and Grand View Drive in Alhambra, a few blocks from the north terminus of the 710 Freeway and a few blocks east of the city limits. Los Angeles.
There have been a notable number of earthquakes felt in this area of Los Angeles County since the summer, centered in El Sereno, a Los Angeles neighborhood west of Alhambra.
On June 2, a 3.4 magnitude earthquake was widely felt throughout Los Angeles and the San Gabriel and San Fernando Valleys. Then, at almost the same location, a 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck on August 12. This earthquake was felt more widely throughout the Southern California region.
The 4.4 magnitude earthquake on August 12 was centered within one of the region's most destructive fault systems, a system capable of producing a 7.5 magnitude earthquake beneath the region's core.
A Times investigation published in November found that many suburbs in this general area hit by Monday's quake had no active plans to require retrofits on seismically vulnerable “soft-storey” apartment buildings, despite the number of quakes Which I felt in recent months.
The term applies to apartment buildings built decades ago where the basement contains space for a garage, carport, or retail store. In these buildings, the ground floor may be stabilized by flimsy, slender columns that can collapse when shaken side to side in an earthquake.
Officials at the Alhambra, which has a population of about 82,000; and Monterey Park, where about 60,000 people live, said earlier this year that their cities did not impose mandatory retrofit codes for residential buildings with soft floors. Officials there said they were closely monitoring neighboring cities and assessing whether similar measures were needed.
In South Pasadena, population 26,000, building officials said earlier this year that the city had no plans to create an inventory of soft-storey apartment buildings or consider mandatory retrofits.
Several years ago, there were plans to create an inventory of earthquake-prone residential buildings in South Pasadena, but city officials ultimately decided they could not allocate the necessary resources, so plans to do so were scrapped.
More than a half-dozen Southern California cities require rehabilitation of soft-storey residential buildings, such as Los Angeles, Torrance, Pasadena, Santa Monica, Culver City, West Hollywood, and Beverly Hills. Burbank just passed a seismic retrofit code for soft-deck residential buildings last week.
