An Israeli airstrike in Syria caused an explosion so large that it could be felt more than 500 miles away.

Video footage shows a huge orange explosion in the distance filling the sky, shortly before the explosion is heard.

The attack on what Israel says were military sites in the Syrian coastal region of Tartous has been described as the “heaviest strike” since the country began targeting the area more than a decade ago.

The explosion was so large, it was reportedly measured at magnitude 3.0 on seismic sensors.

One of the researchers, Richard Cordaro, said the explosion was detected by a magnetic measuring station 820 kilometers (509 miles) away in Esnik in western Turkey, MailOnline reports.

Tartous was the site of one of the two Russian military bases in Syria, and was used as an ammunition depot and naval base.

It is believed that munitions may have contributed to the size of the explosion, in addition to secondary explosions.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said today: “Israeli warplanes launched strikes” targeting a series of sites, including air defense units and “surface-to-surface missile depots.”

She added that the attack was “the most violent strikes in the Syrian coastal region since the strikes began in 2012.”

The bombing comes just one week after the fall of the country's dictator, Bashar al-Assad, who had Russia's support.

Although Israel did not comment on today's attack, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said last week that he had agreed to bomb strategic military sites abandoned by the Syrian army “so that they do not fall into the hands of jihadists.”

Meanwhile, Giora Eiland, former head of Israel's National Security Council, told The Telegraph that one of the country's main strategic priorities is to ensure that the next leader of Syria will not have the ability to attack Israel.

He said: There is no army to prevent us. So destroying Syria's strategic capabilities is a very easy task.

The military site struck today was used to deliver weapons and supplies when Russia intervened in the Syrian civil war in 2015.

Vladimir Putin expanded the facility in 2017, after Assad offered Russia a free 49-year lease on the site in exchange for help keeping him in power.

Experts believe that the number of Russians stationed there decreased significantly after Putin's invasion of Ukraine.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said it had evacuated some of its diplomatic staff from Syria since the fall of Assad.

Critics accuse Israel of violating the 1974 ceasefire and potentially exploiting the current instability in Syria to gain territory.

Netanyahu said that his country “will not allow any hostile force to be stationed on our borders.”

A rebel coalition dominated by the Islamist group Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham overthrew Assad, who fled to Russia with his family after an 11-day offensive.

While targeting Syria, Israel continues to attack Lebanon despite a ceasefire agreement between the two countries, and its bombing of Gaza – now in its 14th month – shows no signs of stopping.

Overnight, an Israeli raid on a school in the town of Beit Hanoun in northern Gaza killed at least 15 people who were sheltering there, including children.

Kamal Adwan Hospital said that among the dead were two parents, their daughter, a father and his son.

In Gaza City, at least 17 people, including six women and five children, were killed in three Israeli air strikes that hit homes housing displaced people, according to Al Ahli Baptist Hospital.

“We woke up to the strike. I woke up with rubble on top of me,” said Yahya Al-Yazji. “I found my wife with her head and skull visible, and my daughter’s intestines were gone. My wife was three months pregnant.

Israel said in a statement that it targeted a “terrorist cell” in Gaza City and a “terrorist gathering point” in the Beit Hanoun area.

A hospital and a Qatari television station said that another Israeli air strike in central Gaza killed Palestinian journalist Ahmed Al-Louh, who worked for Al Jazeera.

The official death toll in Gaza has reached 45,000, although the real number is believed to be much higher.
