PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A 3.3 magnitude earthquake was reported near the southern border of Ohio and western West Virginia on Monday.

The US Geological Survey said the quake occurred about 3 kilometers northwest of Chesapeake, Ohio, around 4:40 p.m. The quake struck about 165 miles southwest of Pittsburgh.

The shaking was felt in West Virginia and Kentucky, with more than 200 people reporting feeling the quake to the US Geological Survey. Authorities said the quake was 3 miles deep.

According to the USGS's Modified Mercalli intensity scale, a 3.3 magnitude earthquake causes “weak” shaking.

“It is noticeably felt by people indoors, especially on the upper floors of buildings. Many people do not recognize it as an earthquake. Parked motor vehicles may shake slightly. Vibrations similar to a passing truck,” the description reads.

No damage or injuries were reported after Monday's earthquake.

Ohioans are not familiar with earthquakes. The state was hit by at least four earthquakes last year, including a 3.7-magnitude quake in August.

Worldwide, there are about one million magnitude 2 earthquakes annually, but they are rarely felt. There are about 1,500 moderate, or magnitude 5.0, earthquakes per year, with an average of one earthquake registering 8 tremors per year.
